As we all know,reading is one of the four basic skills of English.For one thing,not only is it an important part of English communicative competence,but also it represents the students' cognitive ability and language ability.Hence,reading must be the focus of English learning,and it is very important to cultivate students' autonomous learning strategies in English reading.The main initiative of autonomous learning is the teaching method centered on the learners themselves,which aims at students' development and benefits their future survival.In the activities of teaching and learning,students are the main body,and teachers should cultivate the students' initiative spirit.It is in line with the requirements of current curriculum reform in our country,and the new curriculum reform actively advocates that we should cultivate students' strategies to learn independently.In fact,researches on the application of autonomous learning strategies in junior high schools' English reading have had attracted more and more attention from education scholars since the 1980 s.The present study aims to investigate the application of autonomous learning strategies in junior high school's English reading,which includes three research questions: what is the current status of autonomous learning in English reading for junior high school students? What are the factors that affect the autonomous learning strategies of junior high school students? What are the feasible measures to solve these problems?To do the survey,the author randomly chose 280 students from six classes from the grade seven,grade eight as well as the grade nine at Zhengzhou No.52 Junior Middle School as the subjects of the research.Besides,the author interviewed the six English teachers of the school.The research shows that most of the students don't often use the autonomous learning strategies in English reading.Not only are the students lack of initiative and planning,but also the strong learning motivation and pleasant learning experience;moreover,it is found that the environmental factors,teachers' factors and students' own factors are the main factors that influence junior high school students' use of autonomous learning strategies in English reading;to solve these problems,the author puts forward some measures on how to improve the self-learning for junior high schools' students in English reading,which mainly includes the stimulation of the students' reading motivations,the choice of the appropriate reading materials,the cultivation of the students' reading habits as well as the consideration of the appropriate teaching methods.
