A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of Museum International(Issues 1-2,2018,Pages 141-161)

The application of information technology to the digitization of museums has increasingly attracted attention among the museum circles in recent years.Museum International,an academic journal with concerns on the emerging subjects involving eco-museums and cultural heritage,serves as a favorable platform for academic communication between China and foreign countries.Thus,the quality of its translation influences the target readers’ understanding of the development of foreign museums and cultural heritage protection.This project report is intended to discuss the English-Chinese translation of the excerpt(pages 141-161)of Museum International(issues 1-2,2018),which is a part of the whole translation project commissioned by Yilin Press in January,2020.The author of this report was one of the four translators who were required to work together to translate the two issues into Chinese within 7 weeks.In the translation process,the author tried her best to convey the information of the original text to Chinese readers in a precise and clear way and worked out the solutions to the problems encountered in the translation through multiple approaches.Through analyzing the issues and difficulties the author encountered in the process of translation,the report tries to explore and summarize the corresponding solutions to these problems under the guidance of the Skopos theory.The issues and difficulties of this project mainly lie in the translation of terms,proper nouns,long and passive sentences.The methods adopted mainly include:(1)to translate the terms without established translations,the so-called tentative translation method(i.e.attaching the original to corresponding translations of terms)and the method of adding footnotes to their translations as extended subject knowledge can be used;(2)the methods of “zero translation” and transliteration can be used to translate the proper nouns,which can retain their original forms and contents so that the target language readers can obtain the information of the source text as precisely as possible;(3)as for long sentences,the methods of linear translation and re-organizing the syntactic structures are used to ensure that the translation is in line with the Chinese way of thinking,language habits,and logical order;as regards passive sentences,the translation techniques of adding subjects and reorganizing the sentences are used to meet the requirements of smooth Chinese expressions.As the report reveals,a translator should be skilled at utilizing online resources to enhance his or her understanding of the source text,and be adept at synthesizing various methods to handle the problems.In addition,it reveals that effective discussions are conducive to the timely production of a qualified translation in a small-scale project.All this is hoped to be of some referential value for the translation of the texts similar to the project text.
