| As one of the five basic language skills, reading is the important way to obtain information and improve English level for students.More importantly, through reading, students can broaden their horizons, derive the wisdom and improve comprehensive ability. However,at present,English reading teaching focuses on words, phrases, grammar, translation and English reading skills. Most of teachers integrate group discussion into the teaching, but the effect is not very ideal.Consequently, this traditional reading teaching method neglects students’ comprehensive cultivation of language ability, cultural awareness, thinking quality and learning ability.Through students’ independent learning and cooperative learning, reading circles encourage students to play different roles and excavate the text deeply from different perspectives, which helps to cultivate students’ English Subject Key Competencies. Therefore,English Subject Key Competencies are the orientation in this study.Based on constructivism theory and cooperative learning theory, the study is on application of reading circles model to senior high school English reading teaching. The research mainly explores the following three questions:(1)What is the impact of reading circles model oriented by Key Competencies on senior high school students’ English reading ability?(2)What is the impact of reading circles model oriented by Key Competencies on senior high school students’ cooperative learning ability?(3)What is the impact of reading circles model oriented by Key Competencies on senior high school students’ cultural awareness? In this research,a four-month teaching experiment was conducted in two parallel classes of a senior high school in Henan Province.Reading circles model was adopted in EC,while the traditional reading teaching was employed in CC.Before the experiment, students were required to participate in the reading test to know about whether the students’ reading ability in the two classes was at the same level, and then the questionnaire was organized in the two classes to know about students’ cooperative learning ability and cultural awareness. After the experiment, the test was carried out in the two classes again to know about the change of students’ English reading ability as a result of reading circles model. And then students in EC were delivered the questionnaires again, which aimed to compare the differences in students’ cooperative learning ability and cultural awareness before and after the experiment.Through the data analysis of the test and questionnaire results by Excel and SPSS 20.0,the results of the tests suggest that compared with CC,the score of reading test in EC is higher than that in CC after the experiment, and in addition, the score of EC is also higher compared with the results before the experiment. To a certain extent, this reflects the improvement of students’ reading ability in reading circles model.Meanwhile, the results of questionnaires show that students’ cooperative learning ability and cultural awareness in EC can be improved.Furthermore, the results of interview also confirm that reading circles model can improve senior high school students’ English reading ability, cooperative learning ability and cultural awareness. In conclusion, the study finds(1)Reading circles model oriented by Key Competencies can improve senior high school students’ English reading ability;(2)Reading circles model oriented by Key Competencies has positive effect on senior high school students’ cooperative learning ability;(3)Reading circles model oriented by Key Competencies can strengthen senior high school students’ cultural awareness.Through this research, the pedagogical implications can be obtained as follows:Students are the center of the class,so teachers should stimulate their enthusiasm to participate in the class actively; The teacher as an administrator, guide and assistant plays an important role in class;Reading circles model creates a more relaxing and pleasurable class atmosphere which helps to enlighten students with a novel idea; The teacher should encourage students to excavate reading materials deeply from different perspectives. |
