An English To Chinese Translation Practice Report On Commercial Terms And Conditions Of Tender Document For DCS Of Venezuela El Vigia Combined Cycle Power Plant Project

This is a translation practice report on commercial terms of bidding documents.It is about the English to Chinese translation practice of commercial terms in bidding documents under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory.Over the years,Venezuela has suffered from a severe power shortage crisis,often resulting in large blackouts,which has severely affected the country’s production and people’s lives.In order to help solve the electricity shortage in Venezuela,China CAMC Engineering Co.,Ltd.signed a business contract with the Venezuelan state electricity company for Venezuela’s Vigia Combined Cycle power Plan and supporting power transmission and transformation project.The translation material is from the Tender Document for DCS（Decentralized Control System）of Venezuela El Vigia Combined Cycle Power Plant Project by Beijing Maison Worley Parsons E＆T Co.,Ltd.The whole bidding document is divided into a commercial part and a technical part.This report mainly focuses on the translation practice of the commercial part.This translation task took 20 days.The author took charge of the English-Chinese translation,proofreading and typesetting of terms ＆ conditions and format of contract in Chapter 3 of the commercial terms,with a total of more than 12,000 words in English and18,000 words in Chinese.In this translation practice,the author encountered a series of problems.The problems are mainly divided into three levels,vocabulary,syntax and discourse.The author used the functional equivalence theory to find corresponding solutions.The first problem is the translation accuracy of electrical engineering terminology.By searching for parallel texts and consulting professionals,the author gradually found the rules and techniques of translation of professional terms,and achieved lexical equivalence.Secondly,it is the translation problem of passive voice and long difficult sentences that often appear in commercial terms.The author adopts the literal translation,the reverse translation and the split translation method to achieve syntactic equivalence.Finally,it is the problem of how to achieve the cohesion and coherence of translation.By using conjunctive and adverbs,the author connects the texts well,thus realizing the textual equivalence.The technical and informational texts of the commercial terms in the bidding documents also have certain legal elements and have distinct language characteristics.In order to convey information effectively,the author thinks that it is a good choice to adopt the theory of functional equivalence for translation.Based on the difficulties and problems encountered by the author in the translation process,this report will elaborate on the translation strategy of commercial terms based on the theory of functional equivalence.It is hoped that this report can guide future study and work,and also hope to effectively convey the demands of both parties to the contract and promote business cooperation.
