The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011)proposes that teachers should actively use modern teaching resources such as audio-visual,multimedia and the Internet to enrich the content and form of teaching and learning.Subsequently,The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017)adds the language skill of “viewing”,emphasizing the necessity to develop students’ ability to recognize multiple forms of information.However,in the current teaching of English reading in junior high school,many teachers have insufficient teaching resources and little awareness of cultivating students’ ability to identify multimodal information.In this context,the pedagogy of multiliteracies integrates multimodal resources such as text,pictures,video,audio and body movements,aiming to cultivate students’ reading proficiency in recognizing multimodal information,which is more suitable for English teaching reform.Therefore,this study applied the pedagogy of multiliteracies to English reading teaching in junior high school,focusing on the following two questions:(1)What are the effects of the application of the pedagogy of multiliteracies on the English reading proficiency of junior high school students?(2)What are the changes of junior high school students’ attitude towards English reading after the application of the pedagogy of multiliteracies?This study was conducted for 8 weeks with 100 students from two classes in the second grade of a junior high school in Shenyang.The class 3 was the experimental class and was taught with the pedagogy of multiliteracies,while the class 2 served as the control class and was taught with the conventional reading teaching method.At the beginning and end of the teaching experiment,the research instruments of tests,questionnaires and interview were utilized to study the above questions,and SPSS25.0 was used to analyze the resulting data.The results of the study indicated that the application of the pedagogy of multiliteracies in junior high school English reading teaching has been conducive to improving students’ reading proficiency.In addition,students’ attitude toward English reading has also changed,that is,students’ motivation and initiative in reading has significantly enhanced.
