This is an English-Chinese translation, which takes the chapters 30-35 of The Freedom Circus as its source text. The Freedom Circus is written by an Australian author Sue Smethurst. With the Second World War as the background, the whole text tells the story of the Mindla’s family in the hands of the Nazi regime when the Soviet-German War broke out and Nazi Germany occupied whole Poland, reflecting the brutality and bloodshed of the Nazi regime and exposing the harm and reflections brought by the war.The full text adopts a calm and simple narrative way to express the sadness and helplessness of the bumpy fate of the Jewish nation.Since there is no Chinese version of this book for the time being, the author chose it as the text of translation practice. This report expounds the difficulties encountered by the translator in the process of translation and how to give consideration to the literariness of the text as a whole. The translator has done a lot of preparatory work before translation, reading parallel texts and consulting relevant materials.Specifically,in the process of translation, there are two main difficulties encountered by the translator: at lexical level and syntactic level. The understanding of the linguistic meaning of words and sentences as well as the handling of short sentences and long and difficult sentences will directly affect the quality of the translation. In order to express the information conveyed by the source text fluently and accurately, the translator enumerates the corresponding translation methods through the analysis of specific examples. For the difficulties at the lexical level, the translator adopts annotation, usage of Chinese four-character phrases, conversion, extension of word meaning. For difficulties at syntactic level, the translator adopts free translation, amplification, division and restructuring.Through this translation practice, the translator has gained a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of documentary literary texts. In translation, the translator thoroughly understands the relevant history and cultural background,so as to overcomes cultural differences, and makes the style of the translated text and the original text as close as possible. In addition, the translator summarizes the difficulties and shortcomings in translation practice and draws on translation experience from them, hoping to further improve her translation ability and also provide some valuable references for other translators.
