A Report On The E-C Translation Of A History Of Greece （Chapter 7）

This is a translation practice report.The selected translation text is Chapter Seven of A History of Greece written by the British writer Evelyn Abbott.Chapter Seven mainly presents the historical figures and mythological stories related to the four famous city-states in the Greek period with distinctive characteristics of the time.The translation difficulties encountered in the process of translating mainly focus on the lexical level and the syntactic level.The translation difficulties at the lexical level include the translation of person names and place names and words with Greek characteristics.At the same time,there are some other translation difficulties in parts of speech and polysemy.For the translation difficulties at the lexical level,the translator adopted transliteration,annotation,conversion of parts of speech,and selection of word meaning and collocation to translate them.At the syntactic level,the translator adopted division,combination,splitting,recasting,keeping the sequence of the sentence,and reversing the sequence of the sentence to translate attributive clauses,long and difficult sentences,and inverted sentences.In the process of this translation practice,the translator consulted relevant historical materials to deepen her understanding of the Greek history.Meanwhile,it is necessary for the translator to preserve the writing characteristics of the source text as much as possible in the process of translating and try to get close to the target language readers to achieve the purpose of cross-cultural communication.
