A Report On The E-C Translation Of A History Of Greece（Chapter 15）

This is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text of this translation practice is the fifteenth chapter of A History of Greece by British scholar Evelyn Abbott.The fifteenth chapter（Pisistratus and Clisthenes）is concerned with the history of the tyrant politics of the Pisistratus and the constitution of Clisthenes.This translation report is dedicated to introducing the source text of the translation practice and its author,as well as the significance of the translation,and then shifts the focus to difficulties in translation and translation techniques for the difficulties.Translation difficulties are mainly at the word level and the sentence level.Translation difficulties at the word level include the translation of proper nouns in Greek history and words with emotional meanings;translation difficulties at the sentence level are mainly translating appositive clauses,relative clauses and sentences with “it” as the formal subject.Translation techniques for the difficulties mentioned above are:（1）At the word level: annotation and shift;（2）At the sentence level: repetition,division and restructuring.The last chapter summarizes the reflections on the translation practice and the limitations of the translation.It is hoped that the translation of A History of Greece（Chapter 15）can enhance Chinese readers’ understanding of Greek history,promote the exchanges and integration of Chinese and Greek cultures,and attract more readers to know more about Greek history,and it can be also helpful to Chinese scholars in studying Greek history.
