Reading is an essential source of language reception and accumulation of language content and is an important way to acquire messages.English reading plays an important role in developing students’ comprehensive English language skills.Through English reading,students can absorb and consolidate the language knowledge they have learned,learn about foreign cultures,expand their horizons,develop their English thinking,and promote their comprehensive language skills.The current teaching of English reading in the upper grades of elementary school for children in rural areas,what problems exist and how to improve them,needs more attention from the society.Therefore,it is far-reaching to investigate and study the current situation of English reading teaching in the upper grades of rural elementary schools.This study found that the content of reading instruction in their teaching activities was mainly from textbooks and exercise books.The reading content is not rich enough.The reading teaching method is primarily the grammar-translation method,and the teaching method is single.In the teaching process,teachers neglect the application of language knowledge.Teachers do not pay attention to the cultivation of students’ thinking quality.Teachers lack the introduction of cultural background knowledge.Finally,the teaching evaluation method is single,and examinations are still the main evaluation method.On the other hand,students correspondingly suffer from insufficient vocabulary,weak grammatical foundation,low interest in reading,lack of reading strategies and reading skills,poor reading habits,and lack of cultural background knowledge.The main reasons for these problems include the following: the teachers themselves have deviations in the concept and understanding of reading teaching,lack of theoretical training in related teaching methods,and the influence of the existing education model,which is not conducive to the teaching of reading in schools,schools do not pay sufficient attention to improving students’ English reading ability,and parents neglect to cultivate their children’s reading habits.
