The rapid growth rate of domestic waste, its large production volume and low resource recovery rate have become important challenges for urban environmental management. The establishment and improvement of a system for the separation and management of domestic waste is of great significance to the construction of an ecologically civilised city, and is also an important element in promoting sustainable urban development.Shanghai has a long history of domestic waste management and has accumulated a wealth of experience in recycling domestic waste. The Shanghai Municipal Regulations on Domestic Waste Management was officially promulgated in2019 after a series of pilot projects, providing a good case study for the study of urban domestic waste management. As the concrete implementers of waste separation, residents' participation is crucial to sustainable domestic waste management. Therefore,it is important to compare and analyse the level of residents' participation in domestic waste separation and its influencing factors before and after the implementation of the policy, and to simulate the impact of different policies on the willingness to participate in waste separation,in order to further promote environmentally friendly behaviour of the public and optimise management solutions. This study can also provide a basis for the management decisions of government departments. This paper combines relevant literature from home and abroad, and on the basis of questionnaire surveys, uses a combination of theories and methods such as planned behaviour theory, geographical detector and system dynamics to conduct an in-depth discussion on the factors that influence residents' willingness to participate in domestic waste separation behaviour, and to analyse how to guide and encourage residents to actively participate in domestic waste separation at the policy level. The research content and main findings are as follows.(1)This paper first quantitatively analyses the differences in the public's willingness to participate in domestic waste separation in 2020 and 2019.In 2020,residents' satisfaction with community waste collection methods increased slightly and their awareness of waste separation increased significantly, but their willingness to participate in waste separation decreased slightly.A further study of residents' affective tendencies shows that, despite the increase in negative affect shown by residents in their suggestions after a year of separating practice, due to the hassle caused by regular and scheduled separating, residents in 2020 show significantly more positive affect towards being able to achieve the waste separation goals set by the city of Shanghai. In 2020,residents pay more attention to the community waste separation.Community supervisors play a important role in 2020,and community management and grass-roots mobilization play a greater role in waste separation in 2020.(2)Secondly,this paper uses geographical detector to quantify the impact of individual and external factors on residents' willingness and interaction to separate domestic waste. In 2019,attitude towards waste separation had the largest impact of all drivers(q=0.454),while in 2020 it was satisfaction with community waste collection methods(q=0.343).there were significant differences in the factors influencing residents' willingness to participate in 2019 and 2020,with the main influencing factors being attitude towards waste separation and recycling methods respectively. In addition, residents' willingness to participate was less correlated with factors such as urban location and socio-economic factors. The interaction detection results show that the factors influencing residents' willingness to separate domestic waste are a multidimensional conceptual system, and the synergistic effects between different influencing factors are more obvious.(3)Finally,system dynamics simulation was used to simulate the impact of different policies on residents' willingness to participate, and the results showed that the implementation of waste separation policies at the community level was the most effective. When community norms, bin signage and interest in sorting increased, and the time taken for separating decreased, residents' participation rate in waste separation increased significantly.Simulation analysis of the waste separation refinement scenario showed that when separating refinement was increased by a factor of one, residents' participation rate in waste separation decreased significantly compared to the trend in the base scenario, and waste separation refinement had a negative impact on residents' willingness to participate in waste separation. In this scenario, improving environmental facilities and promoting measures can significantly increase the participation rate of residents.Accordingly, this paper suggests that priority should be given to improving community-level factors, combining changes in public attitudes towards the environment with improvements in environmental facilities. This paper studies and compares the level of participation and factors influencing residents' participation in domestic waste separation before and after the implementation of the waste separation policy, identifies and ranks the main factors influencing domestic waste separation, and further simulates the development trend of residents' willingness to participate in domestic waste separation behaviour under different scenarios, which can help realise a sustainable urban domestic waste management model. The study also serves as a reference for other cities in China to promote waste separation and other environmentally friendly behaviours.
