| Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)has a long history, and the royal medical institutions are a special representative of the development of it Beijing’s Imperial Medical Institute, named as TaiYi-Yuan in Chinese,is a unique cultural resource of TCM in the Yanjing area.It was founded in Jin-Zhong-Du as the Jin dynasty became stronger, and it went through the Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties until it disappeared at the end of the Qing dynasty, which is the best witness of the development and evolution of ancient Chinese Palace’s Medicine. This study takes the official histories and political books of the four dynasties, including the History of Jin,the History of Yuan, the History of Ming, and the Manuscript of Qing History,as the main resource of the research, and combines them with the additional books, archives, and biographies inspired by and during the research in the research methods of bibliography and historiography. In order to ensure the quality of the documents, this study selected the "Twentyfour Histories" and the "Manuscript of Qing History" published by the China Book Bureau in the 1970s based on the Bai Nai edition. The earliest word of "Tai-Yi" recorded in the "History of Jin" appeared in 1151 AD,but it the Imperial Medical Institute was not in Beijing at that time.According to the time when the King of Jin Hailing moved the capital and destroyed the original palace in Huining,it can be assumed that the official completion of the Imperial Medical Institute of Jin Dynasty should be between 1153 and 1157 AD.This is also the earliest Imperial Medical Institute in Beijing. The Jin-Zhong-Du Imperial Medical Institute Office should be part of the six ministries,in the southwest of Beijing City, south of the site of pond Yuzao. The Imperial Medical Institute was the first official medical institution to be ranked as a ministry in the Jin Dynasty, which integrated the power of medical education and medical administration, and worked part-time with the Bureau of Imperial Medicine(Shangyi Ju)and the Department of Huimin(Huimin Si),reducing the redundancy of officials and increasing the influence of itself. However, there are still differences in the treatment of medical officials and civil officials, mainly in that medical officials of the same rank were not allowed to wear fish symbols, which symbolized their status. The content of the History of Yuan is affluent, which is a manifestation of the high status and influence of the Imperial Medical Institute in Yuan Dynasty. Its formation is divided into three stages:in the first stage, from 1237 to 1273 A.D.,the Imperial Medical Institute of Yuan Dynasty was in charge of the original Huimin Medicine Bureau(Huimin Ju),and added or merged with the Royal Medicine Institute(Yuyao Yuan),the Royal Medicine Bureau(Huimin Ju),the Guang Hui Division(Guanghui Si),and the Academy of Medicine(Yixue Tiju Si).In the second stage, from 1280 to 1322 A.D.,the Imperial Medical Institute of Yuan, the Imperial Medical Institute was separated from the management of the Xuan Hui Yuan and became an institution directly under the emperor, and began to promote the "Three Emperor’s Temple Studies" from top to bottom. In the third stage, with the decline of the Yuan Empire, the Imperial Medical Institute of Yuan Dadu died out. With the support of the emperor and the highly inflated power and status, the Imperial Medical Institute of Yuan Dynasty had the largest organization structure. In 1295,the "Three Emperors Temple School" was introduced nationwide, combining the "Three Emperors" rituals with the medical school, and medical education began in many parts of the country, and this model was a challenge from the traditional family education model, which was highly blurred. This model was a change from the traditional lineage education model, which highly melted the boundary between Confucian and medical students. The history of the Ming dynasty contains very limited references to the Imperial Medical Institute, and this study incorporates the relevant contents of the Ming dynasty’s political book, the Daming Canon.During the time of Ming Taizu, there were not many adjustments in the system of Imperial Medical Institute of the Yuan Dynasty, but with the development of the Ming Dynasty, the highest rank of Imperial Medical Institute was reduced from the third rank to the fifth rank.In the rituals of "no desecration of sacrifice" denied the three emperors’ temple studies, and the Jiajing emperor revived the "temple sacrifice of the first doctor".showing the contradiction between the traditional Confucian devaluation of the doctor and the actual status of the doctor. In the beginning and middle periods, the medical team was efficiently built up by using both the nomination system and the hereditary system in the selection of talents for the Ming Imperial Medical Institute, but with the emergence of the official trading of "crown ribbons" in the Ming Dynasty, the team building of the Imperial Hospital collapsed. The records of the Qing Imperial Medical Institute are also limited in the Manuscript of Qing History. In terms of the regulatory system, the "King Minister of the Hospital" was established to strengthen the centralization of power;in terms of the rituals,we can vividly restore the "rituals of the first doctors",including the furnishings in the Hall of Jinghui, the benediction, the tributes, the process, etc.,by combining the contents of the Qing Canon. The Qing Imperial Medical Institute Office has gone through two main parts, the old office in Dongjiao Minxiang Lane and the new office in Di’anmen East Street. The new Yamen Office site can be found and the building still exists, which has restorable value and is a high-quality platform for displaying Chinese medicine culture and Beijing Imperial Medical Institute culture. |
