The remarkable achievements of urbanisation in China since the 21 st century have brought great opportunities for development in the construction sector, but at the same time the rough development model of the construction sector has also had an irreversible impact on the environment. The construction sector is a key area for energy saving and emission reduction in China due to its high carbon emissions and high investment returns, which makes it a huge potential for carbon reduction. The measurement of its carbon emission efficiency is an important prerequisite for reducing carbon emissions in this sector, but throughout the research available, there are problems such as unclear delineation of research boundaries and difficulties in obtaining basic data,so there is relatively little research on carbon emission efficiency in the macro construction sector.Under a sustainable development strategy, urbanisation has a multifaceted impact on the construction sector,so a study of the relationship between the two is beneficial to the development of carbon emission reduction in the construction sector and the realisation of the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality in China’s urbanisation process.Based on this background, this paper takes the relationship between the level of urbanisation and the efficiency of carbon emissions in the building sector as the core of the study, and analyses the influence mechanism in terms of the direct influence of the level of urbanisation, the spatial spillover effect between the two and the threshold effect.Firstly,in order to avoid the bias caused by the unclear boundary of carbon emission research in the construction sector, the research boundary of this paper is determined from the perspective and purpose of the research through literature review and analysis, and the carbon emission is calculated. The entropy value method was also used to evaluate the level of urbanisation. Finally,a spatial econometric model and a panel threshold model were constructed to empirically test the influence relationship between the two based on relevant data from 30 provinces in China from 2010 to 2020.The research results show that:(1)China’s provincial carbon emission efficiency in the construction sector shows a "V" shaped trend between 2010 and 2020,which first remains relatively stable, then decreases and then increases, with large differences among provinces and spatial imbalance;(2)The level of urbanisation in China has been increasing year by year, but its spatial unevenness is significant and the degree of variation has increased over time;(3)The "scale effect" and "quality effect" at different stages of urbanization have led to a significant "U-shaped" relationship in its impact on carbon emission efficiency in the construction sector.(4)Due to the existence of factor mobility and urbanization externalities, there is a spatial spillover effect between the two,the level of urbanization can affect the carbon emission efficiency of both local and neighboring areas in the construction sector.(5)When cleaner production crosses the threshold,it can weaken the negative effect of urbanization on the carbon emission efficiency of the construction sector, there is a threshold effect. Finally, based on the findings of this study, this paper proposes policy recommendations for the coordinated development of urbanisation and carbon emission reduction in the construction sector in terms of urbanisation construction,low-carbon development in the construction sector, and inter-regional exchanges,in order to further promote the realisation of the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality in the construction sector in the urbanisation process.
