A Study Of The Patriotic Health Movement In Shanghai During The Anti-American War

This article examines the practice of patriotic sanitation in Shanghai during the period of anti-American aid,particularly in the context of anti-bacterial warfare.As a modern colonial city,Shanghai was densely populated and had poorly developed public health facilities,which made it easy for epidemics to spread.Moreover,as one of the municipalities directly under the central government of China,the implementation of the campaign in Shanghai was a typical example for the whole country.In the course of the campaign,Shanghai’s Patriotic Health Movement was behind the rest of the country at the beginning,but through the establishment of a comprehensive organisational system and extensive publicity and mobilisation,the Shanghai Patriotic Health Movement was able to catch up.With the victory in the "germ war" and the end of the war against the United States,the patriotic health campaign gradually moved into a regular construction.In view of the conditions,Shanghai gave full play to the role of the masses when launching the patriotic health campaign.Through extensive propaganda and mobilisation,the public was guided to compare the health conditions of the old and new societies,and to combine the war against the US and the war of Japanese invasion,effectively stimulating the national consciousness and patriotic enthusiasm of the masses and laying the emotional foundation for the patriotic health campaign.Through the evaluation of merits and models,the masses are inspired to actively participate in the patriotic health campaign.Various forms of organisation were adopted to adhere to unified leadership and improve organisational security.And by formulating patriotic hygiene conventions,home and perfecting the inspection and evaluation system and the mass supervision system,the patriotic hygiene campaign is regulated by the system in a continuous and normal way.The Shanghai Patriotic Health Campaign has contributed to the improvement of personal and social hygiene and the integration of social resources by the state,thus forming a model of health work with Chinese characteristics.This practice,which gives full play to Shanghai’s regional characteristics and is based on the actual situation,gives full play to the Party’s leading role of overseeing the overall situation and coordinating all parties,reaches out to the masses and plays the role of the main body of the masses,and serves the people wholeheartedly by putting people first,provides a reference and experience for the new era of patriotic health campaigns,co-ordinating epidemic prevention and control,and building a healthy China.
