A Report On Translating "Detection Of Antibody To Hepatitis C Virus In Transfusion Recipients With Acute And Chronic Hepatitis C"

Since the COVID-19 outbreak in December 2019,people’s attention to medical information continues to increase.In 2020,the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology was awarded to three great scientists such as Harvey James Alter for their decisive contribution to the fight against blood-borne hepatitis C.The translation material is a literature on hepatitis C virus antibody published by Harvey et al in The New England Journal of Medicine.Medical English has its own characteristics in lexical and syntactic level.Relevant translation strategies were specifically applied according to the characteristic of lexical and syntactic in the translation material.At the lexical level,according to the needs of meaning,rhetoric or syntax,some words,phrases,clauses or complete sentences are appropriately added,so that the translation conforms to the expressions in Chinese in terms of grammar and language form.The strategy of subtraction is used for words that do not have complete lexical meaning,but have grammatical meaning or grammatical function,such as pronouns,numerals,articles,auxiliary verbs,some adverbs,prepositions,conjunctions,and exclamations.At the syntactic level,the nominal structures in Medical English are common.In order to make the structure more compact and more concise,it is processed by conversion of word class under the condition of ensuring that the meaning of the original text is unchanged.In view of the frequent occurrence of attributive clauses in Medical English,the report analyzes the sentence structure and appropriately adjusts the position of attributive components to make the translation more accurate.In view of the situation that passive voice is often used in Medical English in order to highlight objectivity,the report deals with it by conversion of voice.On the basis of fully combining linguistic characteristics and text characteristics of the translation material,case analyses are conducted from the five aspects of addition,subtraction,conversion of words class,inversion,and conversion of voice to analyze the characteristics of Chinese translation of Medical English.The report shows that we can analyze medical text from these five aspects,although Medical English has its own characteristics in lexical and syntactic level.
