This thesis discusses translation methods of popular science books of management,taking Backstage Leadership as a case.The source text is featured by technical vocabularies,interdisciplinary information,logic thinking and culture-specific items.Considering the characteristics and purpose of the text,the translation aims to accurately convey management principles and successfully promote creative management concepts.Most researches of popular science translation were based on natural science,with less discussion on the translation of social science texts.In comparison,popular science books of management are closer to social interaction,involving a large number of business cases and organizational behavior analysis.The combination of varied sentence structures in such texts provides a change of pace to grasp readers.It is necessary to use appropriate translation methods to improve the quality of translation and fulfill the communicative function of source texts.The theoretical basis of this thesis is the communicative translation theory put forward by Peter Newmark.According to Peter Newmark’s text typology,this book is an informative text with characteristics of vocative ones.Based on the characteristics of the source text as well as the differences between Chinese and English,the thesis summarizes the translation principles into accuracy,logicality and fluency,guided by communicative translation theory.Through the analysis of specific examples,corresponding translation methods are explored.Under the guidance of the principle of accuracy,standardization and explicitation of key concepts are needed for ensuring target readers that the original book is professional and credible.Guided by the principle of logicality,translators can use such methods as addition and omission,conversion,and recombination to optimize sentential logic so that target readers can follow the author’s train of thought and build knowledge systems.Under the principle of fluency,clarification and loan translation can be used to make up for the cultural gap between English and Chinese,enabling Chinese readers to share as similar as possible reading experience with English readers,and achieving effective conversion of cultural information.Communicative translation theory emphasizes the reception of the target language readers on the premise of being faithful to the original text,allowing translators to exert their initiative.This thesis has proved that this theory is valuable in translating popular science books of management that are both scientific and contemporary.
