This report is based on the author’s interpreting service at Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum.The author selects the explanations of the tour guide and the dialogue with the client as analytical text.The interpreting of the guide introduction features many famous historical figures in the Three Kingdoms Period,and covers a large number of historical and culture-loaded words,which includes many allusions,idioms,and sayings,bringing great difficulties to interpreting and also having an enlightening effect on the practice of guide interpreting.Interpretive Theory holds that interpreting is a communicative activity involving human cognition.On the basis of this view,the Triangular Model of interpreting procedure is proposed to give insights into the cognitive process of interpreting and highlight the importance of the formation of meaning in the whole process of interpreting.After analyzing the transcript,the author uses the Triangular Model under the guidance of Interpretive Theory to analyze the difficulties on comprehension and expression of the text.The author also discusses interpreting tactics to help the interpreter know the guide’s intention by using her knowledge reserves,and quickly and accurately convey the original meaning in guide interpreting.Finally,the author summarizes the advantages and limitations of this interpreting practice and provides some suggestions for future interpreting tasks.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter One introduces the origin and significance of the task,the characteristics of the source text and the background knowledge of guide interpreting.Chapter Two covers the pre-interpreting preparation,interpreting process and post-interpreting management.Chapter Three summarizes the development process of Interpretive Theory,the main contents of the Triangular Model and its guiding role in this interpreting practice.Chapter Four is a case study.Problems are found from the perspectives of comprehension,deverbalization and re-expression.Combining specific examples,the author elaborates the application of amplification,paraphrasing,omission,and reserving original speech with its explanation in the practice of guide interpreting.Chapter Five is the conclusion part,which summarizes the main findings and shortcomings of this report,and puts forward some suggestions for interpreting practice in the future.The author hopes to offer some advice to interpreters in their guide interpreting practices in the future to contribute to promoting cross-cultural communication and the dissemination of Chinese culture.
