This thesis is based on the author’s English-Chinese translation practice of two issues of the Explorer magazine in 2021,a children’s popular science digital classroom magazine produced by the National Geographic Society.The author selected content designed for fifth to sixth grade,which delivers background knowledge related to the geographic and scientific professions.The innovative point of this thesis lies in: Though the source text is typical informative text,its content must achieve both vocative function and informative function in an aim to popularize geological and scientific knowledge for children readers.So the source text has mixed stylistic features.In face of this challenge,the author and translator adopted different translation strategies targeted for each text function accordingly.The translation is under the guideline of Peter Newmark’s text typology theory.According to that theory,the content of this children’s popular science magazine can be categorized as informative text.Furthermore,the target readers are children of 10 to 11.So the translation task is not just about reproducing but also recreating.As for the reproducing process,the author maintained the authenticity of the geographic and scientific knowledge.Also,she made the language of the informative part more readable,plain and friendly for target children readers by breaking down long and complex sentences,using active voice consciously instead of passive voice,and offering knowledge supplement.Concerning the recreating process,the author made the language of the vocative part more suitable for children to read by strengthening its rhythm,adding modal particles,using colloquial expressions.Through this translation practice,the author tried to explore some key points in the process of translating children’s popular science books and provide a useful attempt for the stylistics and translation study of children’s popular science books.
