In recent years,a large number of machine tools have entered the Chinese market, and the demand for translation of technical and practical texts such as operator’s manual and installation instruction has also increased. This type of text mainly functions is the informative function, clarifying the installation methods and precautions of the equipment to the operators and most importantly paying attention to the transmission of information. In the process of translation,it is necessary to take the expected function of the translation as the starting point, that is,to guide operators to install and operate the machine, and to choose the best translation method according to the readers of the translated text, the expression habits and characteristics of the target language, which coincides with the primary principle of Skopos Theory. Therefore, this report uses Skopos Theory as the theoretical guide, and investigates how Skopos Theory might be applied to the translation of L81 Operator’s Manual(hereinafter referred to as The Manual).Within the three rules of Skopos Theory, the skopos rule instructs the translator to choose the appropriate translation methods according to the purpose of the translation. The coherence rule requires that the translation should conform to the expression habits and language characteristics of the target language to the greatest extent possible, and should be consistent in meaning without contradictions. The fidelity rule requires that the translation should be as faithful to the original as possible on the basis of an accurate understanding of the original.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the translation practice improves the translator’s subjective initiative, and the translator needs to consider the target language audience, language characteristics, expression habits, etc.to select an effective translation method. The translation of The Manual should meet the functions of guiding operation and transmitting information, the language characteristics and expression habits of the translation being considered for the readers such as machine tool operators, and professional terminology, complex sentences, imperative sentences and passive sentences being given more translation skills.By completing this translation practice and writing a practice report, the author has a better grasp of the translation of such texts and Skopos Theory, and hopes that the outcomes of this practice can provide some useful ideas for future translations in this field.
