| The development of machine industry has played a decisive role in promoting the economic development of China, among which the pressure washer is one of the most scientific, economic and environment-friendly clean ways recognized in the world, which is widely used in commercial, industrial and family fields. Therefore, the translation of the operator’s manual of pressure washer is of great significance, not only to help Chinese users correctly assemble, operate and maintain high pressure washers, but also to promote international trade activities and the continuous innovation and development of this industry.Based on the English-Chinese translation practice project of SUNJOE Operator’s Manual-Electric Pressure Washer and under the guidance of Verschueren’s adaptation theory, this translation report analyzes the text features of the operator’s manual in detail, explores translation strategies, and deals with the difficulties encountered in the translation process. This translation report contains four parts: The first chapter is an introduction to the translation project, providing an overview of the background and significance of the study, and analyzing the text types and characteristics. The second chapter is the translation execution process, describing the translation work in three stages: pre-translation,translation and post-translation.Based on Verschueren’s adaptation theory, the third chapter analyzes specific cases in detail from three aspects, vocabulary, syntax and discourse,to explore appropriate translation strategies. The findings are as follows: technical terms and abbreviations should be translated literally or zero-translated and modal verbs should be free-translated properly;imperative sentences would better be translated with amplification, passive sentences should be modified for the passive expression or transformed into active sentences and conditional sentences should be translated sequentially or reversely;graphic information should be translated literally or zero-translated and parallel structures should be translated with amplification appropriately. The fourth chapter,as the concluding part, summarizes the main content of this thesis and the author’s harvest and perception in the process of translation practice. |
