A Practice Report On Escort Interpreting At Fan Changjiang Memorial

In recent years,with the rapid development of the Chinese economy and the increase in its comprehensive national power,China has risen to be a prime travel destination,attracting a large number of overseas tourists every year.Escort interpreting plays a vital role,as the quality of interpreting directly affects the visitor’s experience and understanding of the destination’s culture.This report is an interpreting practice report based on the author’s practice as an escort interpreter for a Pakistani friend named Ali visiting the Fan Changjiang Memorial.In the process of escort interpreting,the interpreter’s workload varies depending on the familiarity with the source language,which accordingly affects the interpreter’s choice of cohesive devices in an effort to perform high-quality interpreting.This report reviews the interpreting process and finds that although problems such as misinterpreting and information loss are equally present,the most prominent problem is the lack of cohesion,thus causing the transcribed text to be fragmented and isolated.Therefore,in the case analysis the author tries to use cohesion theory as a framework to explore the cohesive devices that an interpreter tends to adopt with high and low load cases respectively,and how to improve the quality of interpreting through cohesive devices.Through the case analysis,this report argues that the use of the means of amplification,with ellipsis,reference,and conjunction as cohesive devices,helps to improve the quality of interpreting under high workload pressure;when under low workload pressure,the interpreter can moderately increase the use of conjunction based on the most commonly used device of reference to achieve the best interpreting effect.The author hopes that this interpreting practice report can provide some experience and inspiration for more interpreters.
