A Report On E-C Translation Of Oil,Water And Climate,An Introduction(2014)(Chapters 1-2)

With the rapid development of economy,China is taking an increasingly active role in the international energy cooperation and exchange.Therefore,how to accurately translate energy English literatures is very important for informational transmission and international cooperation.This translation practice material was extracted from the first and second chapters of Katherine Gautier’s Oil,Water and Climate,An Introduction(2014),which deals with the application of oil,water and other energy resources,the impact on climate change and the development of new energies.Through the analysis of the source texts,the translator found that energy science and technology texts have its own characteristics at the lexical,syntactic,and discourse levels,which are embodied in strong stylistic objectivity,rigorous use of words,many technical words and wide use of passive voice.Eco-translatology theory emphasizes that translators should not only achieve the dynamic balance between the source and the target texts by adapting to the translation environment,but also focus on the ecological translation environment,and then make the selective transformation with the highest adaptability.Using this theory to guide the translation of energy science and technology texts could improve the informational communication between different languages and ecologies,and have significances for promoting cross-cultural communication in the energy industry.Under the guidance of Eco-translatology theory,this translation practice was completed from the linguistic,communicative and cultural dimensions.This report summarized the specific solutions to the problems encountered in the practice.At the lexical level,in terms of technical terms,units of measurement and some common nouns,the transformation of linguistic and communicative dimensions were combined,and translation techniques such as accuracy of technical terms,word-adding and specialization of common nouns were used;At the syntactic level,in dealing with the passive voice,long and complicated sentences and parenthesis,the translation techniques such as word order adjustment and voice conversion are adopted according to the combination of the transformation from linguistic,communicative and cultural dimensions.At the discourse level,the transformation of communicative and cultural dimensions was emphasized,and the integrity of the translated texts is ensured by the reproduction of the logical relations and cohesive devices from the source texts.It is hoped that the report can provide references for translators in related industries.
