The English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High School(2017Edition Revised 2020)is the latest curriculum standard in force in China,which has pointed out a clear direction for the development of English basic education in China.Senior high school English teachers are the implementers of basic education,and the instructional design made by teachers is an important vehicle to reflect the educational philosophy and guiding ideology of the implementers.English reading teaching is one of the cores of cultivating students’ subject key competencies and designing a good reading instructional design is a prerequisite,and the instructional design plays a crucial role in the actual teaching process.Based on a careful reading of relevant literature,this study analyzes 20 instructional designs of senior high school English reading classes collected from Tongliao No.1 Senior High School based on constructivist learning theory and humanistic education theory,and conducted classroom observations and interviews with 10 English teachers who participated in the study.Then,the following three research questions are addressed: 1)What is the current status of senior high school English teachers’ application of English subject key competencies in the instructional design of reading classes? 2)What are the factors that influence the implementation of subject key competencies in the instructional design of senior high school English reading classes? 3)How do teachers effectively practice the concept of key competencies in the instructional design of senior high school English reading classes?This study concludes that current senior high school English teachers have initially developed an educational philosophy of subject key competencies.In the design of senior high school English reading class instruction,teachers consciously reflect English subject key competencies,but not sufficiently.In the process of implementing English subject key competencies,senior high school English teachers focus on the cultivation of language ability,and the cultivation of cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability seems insufficient.The main reasons for this situation are,firstly,that in the current educational context,the senior high school English teaching model is still an examination-oriented education system.Secondly,some teachers are not quite adapted to the latest teaching concept.Thirdly,the time for teaching activities is not properly adjusted and controlled.Finally,the lack of learning situation analysis also has a certain degree of impact on the effective implementation of key competencies in English.To solve these problems,it is necessary to further deepen the educational reform.The implementation of the English curriculum requires teachers to integrate the content and design learning activities to achieve the integration and unification of goals,contents and methods.This study can provide some insights for English teachers in designing English reading lessons based on English subject key competencies,and it can also help English teachers to systematically develop students’ subject key competencies in the process of English reading teaching practice,to realize the nurturing value of English subject.
