This is a report on the translation of Chapter Four of Robert Di Yanni’s You Are What You Read: A Practical Guide to Reading Well published in 2021.The book aims to promote readers’ appreciation and experience of all kinds of literary works through introducing a variety of practical reading strategies.The source text can be categorized as English instructional text.Its target readerships are mainly the general intellectuals.Based on the text function and features,the author of the report has followed Jef Verschueren’s Adapttion Theory in revising and polishing the translation version.The findings are expected to summarize experiences from translation practice and provide a reference for other translators working on instructional text.Practice shows that translators,based on the text functions and target readers’ expectations,should flexibly exploit translation skills,such as conversion,addition,to accurately convey the information of source text and cater to the reading habits of the readers of the target text.As for the literary examples of instructional text,the translator should highlight the elegance and delicacy of the translation to enable the readers to appreciate these characteristics.As for the explanatory part,the translator should promote word choice and adjust sentence structure to make target text concise and fluent,and conform to the aesthetic expectations of the Chinese readers.Summarizing the experience of this translation practice is expected to provide a reference for the translation of similar texts,so that the Chinese translation of English teaching-aid texts can better meet readers’ expectations and better realize their educational functions.
