With the development of the economy and society and the improvement of people’s quality of life,the coffee industry has gone through three waves,and specialty coffee has begun to enter millions households.The book Stuff Every Coffee Lover Should Know was selected for this translation project,aiming to popularize professional coffee knowledge and culture to coffee enthusiasts and consumers,and promote international exchange and popularity of coffee.Newmark’s text category translation theory suggests that the translation strategy adopted differs for different text categories.The text type of Stuff Every Coffee Lover Should Know is a combination of the expressive text and the vocative text.For texts that meet the characteristics of expressive texts,the translation strategy of semantic translation is used to ensure the consistency of the author’s subjective emotion and position;for texts that meet the characteristics of vocative texts,the translation strategy is communicative translation,calling the reader to acting,thinking and feeling,the core of which is the reader,and the translation process should focus on the effect of infection or persuasion.When it comes to communicative translation,specific translation methods such as the conventional translation,the old words with new meanings and the supplementary interpretation can be chosen.Instead of word-for-word translation,readers’ feelings and understandings are important.In this report,the application and limitations of text category theory,semantic translation,and communicative translation in the field of translation are examined.While text category theory,semantic translation,and communicative translation theories are extensively used,it is infrequent to come across a singular text category,which can present difficulties in practical implementation.Therefore,translators must acquire and employ diverse translation theories and strategies,while integrating them with their own expertise to achieve optimal translation outcomes.
