Research On The Grammar Teaching Of Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book (Peking Dialect)

In 1911,English Presbyterian missionary Thomas C.Fulton came to China 27 years later and wrote a Chinese textbook that recorded the official dialect of Beijing in the late Qing Dynasty,which recorded Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect).At that time,this textbook was an important Chinese textbook for missionaries who came to China for the first time.The corpus collected in this textbook comes from the author’s real record of spoken Chinese in daily life at that time,reflecting the vocabulary and grammatical characteristics of Beijing dialect in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China,reflecting the author’s relatively advanced teaching philosophy,and was an important material for studying the history of Chinese textbooks for Western Chinese people in the late Qing Dynasty,as well as an important corpus for studying Beijing dialect in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China.Some research has been done on the vocabulary of the book,but insufficient attention has been paid to the grammar part.Based on the comprehensive combing of the text,this thesis comprehensively describes and analyzes the parts of speech,syntactic components,sentence patterns and sentence classes,aiming to clarify the arrangement of grammar items in the book,reveal the grammar teaching principles and teaching methods used in the textbook,summarize its contribution to teaching Chinese as a foreign language,and provide reference for today’s teaching of Chinese as a foreign language in terms of corpus,methods and concepts.This thesis is divided into eight parts:Part I: Introduction.The content includes a brief description of the purpose and significance of this topic,the research status,research objects and research methods.Part II: The introduction of Thomas C.Fulton and Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect).We have combed the life of the editor,the version of the book,the style and content of the book,the topics of the book.We also explored the nature of Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect).Part III: Research on the Grammar Points of Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect).we examine all the words,phrases and sentences included in the textbook,analyze the grammar points that may be involved in the textbook from the perspective of textbook arrangement.Firstly,parts of speech are investigated,and the seven parts of speech are mainly analyzed: verbs,pronouns,nouns,adverbs,particles,measure words,numerals.Secondly,the syntactic components are analyzed and focuses on the types and arrangement of complements.Thirdly,we analyze the sentence structure,focusing on "Ba" sentences,"Shi" sentences and connecting sentences;Finally,we analyze the sentence categories of the textbook,and focus on analyzing the types and arrangement characteristics of interrogative and imperative sentences.Part IV: Principles and methods of Grammar Teaching in Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect).Based on the analysis of grammar items in the previous text,this thesis examines the grammar teaching principles and methods reflected in the book from the perspective of second language teaching.We believe that the grammar teaching principles of this book are to focus on practicality,pertinence and practice.The grammar teaching methods of this book are to neglect grammar theory and emphasize practical applications,emphasizing communicative teaching and comparative teaching.Part V: The evaluation of the Grammar Teaching of Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect).This chapter summarizes the strengths and weaknesses of Grammar Teaching in this textbook.Part VI: The enlightenment of Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect)to the teaching of Chinese grammar as a foreign language today.In this chapter,we explore the enlightenment of Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect)to the current teaching of Chinese as a foreign language grammar and the compilation of teaching materials.Part VII: Conclusion.We expounds the research value of Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect)and shortcomings of this thesis.Part VIII: Appendix.This section is the corpus we have collected for the convenience of interested researchers,and also to facilitate other readers to more intuitively understand the content of Chinese-English Mandarin Phrase Book(Peking Dialect)and this thesis.
