The English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2022Edition)advocates for English teachers to carry out integrated practical activities in English to guide students to use the language and their interdisciplinary knowledge to solve problems in the context of their personal life experiences and social needs,driven by authentic problems or tasks,and to implement the humanistic goals of the curriculum.English reading,as an important language skill,is not only a learning channel,but also the foundation and prerequisite for developing other abilities.However,in junior high school English reading teaching,there are problems such as neglecting the students’ subject position,adopting grammar-translation method,and ignoring the cultivation of reading ability and interest.Problem-based Learning teaching based on the STEAM education concept emphasizes the student as the main body and the use of interdisciplinary knowledge to solve contextual problems through group cooperation,which coincides with the new curriculum requirements for English teaching.Therefore,it is necessary to apply this teaching in the practice of solving the problems mentioned above.Based on cooperative learning theory,this study takes 118 students from two eighth-grade classes in Tunjiao Middle School,Xingren City,as the research subjects and conducts a one-semester experimental study.Among them,the experimental class conducts PBL teaching based on STEAM in English reading,while the control class uses traditional teaching methods.The research aims to provide answers to the following two questions:(1)How can PBL teaching based on STEAM be used of English reading in middle school effectively?(2)What are the effects the application of PBL teaching based on STEAM for middle school English reading?Data is collected through tools such as questionnaires and tests,and SPSS27.0 statistical software is used for data analysis.The following conclusions are drawn: Under the guidance of contextual and cooperative principles,effective PBL teaching based on STEAM in junior high school English reading can be carried out through creating STEAM situations,group cooperation analysis and problem-solving,and timely reflection through evaluation.This instruction emphasizes the students’ subjectivity and enables them to use their interdisciplinary knowledge to solve STEAM contextual problems in reading through group work,which can effectively improve students’ English reading ability,reading interest and English reading classroom participation.
