| With the internationalization of China,the use of English has become more and more extensive,and English is now used in many places in our daily life.With the formulation and development of new curriculum standards,many excellent teachers and scholars have begun to show interests in English teaching and also have achieved some results.However,there are still some conspicuous problems in middle school English teaching,which requires further exploration.Primary and secondary schools in China accept traditional indoctrination during their growth,which leads to a great decline in students’ interest in English learning.This also causes students to pay too much attention to the memory of knowledge and little attention to the understanding of knowledge,its practice and application;At present,middle school English textbooks and middle school English tests often involve multi-disciplinary knowledge.Faced with this trend of integration of disciplines,most students are a confused state,which reflects their lack of comprehensive quality of subjects and indicates that they ignore the cultivation requirements of comprehensive quality.Therefore,in the process of teaching English,teachers should be careful to cultivate students’ practical ability and complete their quality of the subjects,and ensure to stimulate students’ interests in learning to improve the effectiveness of learning.STEAM(Science,Technology,Engineering,Mathematics and Arts)education refers to the fusion of knowledge in multiple disciplines,including science,technology,engineering,mathematics,and art,used to avoid the separation between disciplines,to cultivate students’ scientific and innovative literacy.Relevant scholars and teachers have actively discussed the feasibility of applying STEAM educational concepts in teaching.STEAM education philosophy is conducive to cultivating students’ interest in learning,which can be effectively deepened from the diversified perspectives of various disciplines,so as to cultivate students’ comprehensive discipline quality,practical ability and innovation ability.However,most researches at home and abroad focuses on the application of STEAM educational concepts in science education,but seldom pays special attention to the application of STEAM educational concepts in English teaching.Based on domestic and foreign researches,combined with relevant desk researches,the author of the article conducted an empirical study on the application of STEAM educational concepts in the teaching of English in junior middle school.This research attempts to answer the following questions: 1)Can the English teaching activity based on STEAM educational conceptshelp to stimulate students’ interest in learning English and enhance their leading role? 2)Are the English teaching activities based on STEAM educational concepts beneficial to the improvement of students’ English practical ability? 3)Can the English activities based on the STEAM educational concepts promote the comprehensive quality of students’ English learning and the improvement of their communication ability?The author conducted a relevant experimental research in Class 6 and Class 7,Grade 1 of Xinhua Middle School,Longhua district,Shenzhen.The author takes two parallel classes of seventh grade as research subjects.One of them is an experimental class,this class applies STEAM educational concepts to English teaching.The other is a control class,where teachers follow the traditional English teaching method.Before and after the experiment,the author tested 100 students in EC and CC.Combined with SPSS 20.0 data analysis,relevant conclusions are drawn that STEAM educational concepts can stimulate students’ learning enthusiasm,cultivate their practical ability and improve their comprehensive quality.Through the questionnaire survey and the data analysis of the tests,the students in the EC have significantly enhanced their ability of using English,and the comprehensive quality of the subject is higher than that in the CC.It can be seen that STEAM educational concepts is effective in middle school English teaching.Based on the combination of STEAM educational concepts and English teaching,the results of this study have certain enlightenment for English teaching.The application of STEAM education philosophy conforms to the research direction of modern English education and the direction of English curriculum reform in China,which can improve students’ practical ability,learning interest and comprehensive quality of subjects.It integrates innovative ideas and activities on the basis of traditional English teaching. |
