A Practice Report On The Translation Of Definitions In Dictionary Of Aeronautical Terms(Excerpts)

Dictionary of Aeronautical Terms,the authoritative aviation-specific dictionary,contains more than 12,000 precise aeronautical terms and definitions,including Part I of Title 14 of CFR(Code of Federal Regulations),and all relevant sections of aeronautical terms.This report is about the English-Chinese translation of the entries,definitions and explanations in the dictionary.The dictionary is highly professional and performs strict wording and logic,which makes it difficult to translate them from English to Chinese.This translation practice report analyzes the difficulties and problems in translation by comparing the characteristics of English and Chinese languages,based on the classification of definitions and the principles of definition translation.In the process of translation,the translation methods are selected by analyzing language features and definition patterns of professional dictionaries,striving to be accurate and concise and taking into account the Chinese language habits.In this thesis,definition patterns and translation principles are used as important theoretical bases.The translator performed in-depth analysis of the characteristics of various definition patterns from the perspective of terminology and logic,and summarized seven definition patterns,namely,simple definitions,synthesized definitions,lexical definitions,stipulative definitions,contextual definitions,theoretical definitions and compound definitions.The definition patterns are analyzed in detail by the structure and information focus to explore the translation methods in practice.As for simple definitions and synthesized definitions,the genera should be identified,as well as the distinguishing features.The translation method of changing order can be adopted to adjust the positions of non-predicate verb phrases and attributive clauses.The translation of lexical definitions focuses on the logic and expression of English and Chinese language,so the omission and amplification methods can be adopted by analyzing logical structure and information for static equivalence in translation,making the translation semantically clearer.Stipulative definitions,contextual definitions and theoretical definitions are closely concerned with the science translation,which requires accurate grasp of the context and accurate and rigorous translation.Following the definition patterns and the translation principles of definitions,the translation methods that are generally applicable to English-Chinese translation of definitions are expected to provide references for the translation of similar texts.
