| This paper is a translation practice report based on The Effects of AI on the Working Lives of Women. The text selected for translation is a social scientific informative text, taking AI and its relation with women’s work and life as the core topic. It details the impact of artificial intelligence(AI)systems on women’s work opportunities and their status and treatment in the workforce at different stages of their career, from job requirements,to hiring to career progression and upskilling within the workplace. In the process of translating such social science information text,it is necessary to accurately convey the original content and ensure the consistency between the translation and the original text. However, since Chinese and English are two completely different language, complete equivalence between the original text and the target text often cannot be realized in translation, which requires a series of transformations such as part of speech conversion and sentence structure conversion to achieve translation equivalence.Catford’s translation shifts theory, from the micro level, focuses on the analysis and shifts below the sentence level in the aspects of level shifts and category shifts. It has significant practical value and provides reference for solving the problems encountered in the translation of informational texts. This translation report selects cases in translation practice,to analyze in detail the phenomenon of level shifts and category shifts in translation at the lexical, syntactic and semantic levels from the perspective of Catford’s translation shifts theory. In terms of level shifts, the expression of English grammar level can be transformed into Chinese lexical level through the conversion of singular and plural forms and verb tenses. In terms of category conversion, the same language level of English and Chinese can be converted by means of sentence structure conversion, part of speech conversion and so on.In translation practice, translation shifts theory can help translators adopt specific shift strategies according to the actual situation to optimize the translation of the information in the source text. |
