| The Sanxingdui civilization is an integral part of ancient Chinese civilization and one of the fruits of human society in the history of world civilization.Unfortunately, there are few existing English translations of the Sanxingdui civilization. However,Sanxingdui: Bronze Shining the World is a very systematic book but not accessible to the Western world, and there is an urgent need for its translation. The translator has chosen the second chapter for translation. This chapter primarily delves into the exploration of symbolism, discussing it from three perspectives: bronze masks, ivory, and the bronze scared tree, while examining the symbolism of these artifacts.Following Newmark’s the theory of text typology and guided by semantic translation and communicative translation, the original text has been analyzed and translated at four levels: word, phrase, sentence, and style.Additionally, relevant translation strategies or methods have been proposed. At the word level, the translator mainly adopted amplification and paraphrase translations for culture-loaded words and proper nouns;at the phrase level, the translator mainly adopted adaption, free translation, corresponding translation, etc.for four-character words or idioms;at the sentence level, the translator adopted amplification, division, and combination for four aspects: long and loose sentences, sentences without subjects, passive sentences and repetitive sentences;finally,at the style level, the translator mainly adopted literal translation and other translation methods from two aspects: the linguistic features and the rhetorical techniques used in it.There are also some problems and shortcomings in the translation, such as the gaps in meaning caused by cultural transplantation, the richness and precision of translation of some words still need to be improved, etc. In the process of translation, the translator strives to faithfully and appropriately convey the meaning intended by the author of the original text and strives for “elegance,” hoping that this translation will help to promote the dissemination of local culture and the popularization of history and culture so that the Chinese civilization of Sanxingdui can be transmitted abroad in a more convenient and faster way. |
