An increasing number of mechanical products of China are sold prominently due to the fast development of science and technology.In order to endow foreign customers with better understanding of our performance,quality and operation techniques,the demand for English translation of mechanical manuals sees large promotion.In order to expand the competitive advantage of China’s construction machinery exports and overseas business,it is essential to have objective,genuine and high-level translated product manuals,and sometimes it can even play a key role.Mechanical product manuals are construction machinery texts,which are characterized by objectivity,logicality and complexity.For translators who are not trained as mechanical specialists or know little about the industry,translating mechanical product manuals accurately and authentically has become an urgent mission.This translation practice excerpts from chapter 4,Operation and Maintenance,which introduces the important safety contents related to the operation,maintenance and repair of products.X Compactor Use and Maintenance Manual is widely applied in the sales,promotion and daily use of domestic products and has important commercial value.The content of the translation can meet the needs of technicians and customers of foreign branches to understand and master product knowledge,promote technical exchange and production updates,and adapt to the needs of different overseas markets.Guided by Skopos theory,the translator has translated the original text in line with the three rules of Skopos,coherence and fidelity,pointed out the problems that should be paid attention to in the translation process of construction machinery texts,and summarized the translation methods and strategies of such texts,which made Skopos theory get a new combination in practical application,hoping to offer reference and significance for the translation of construction machinery texts.The whole translation practice report includes five parts.The first part is the task description.The author introduces the background,requirements,importance and structure of this translation practice project.The second part is the practice process,which is divided into pre-translation,during-translation and post-translation.First of all,pre-translation should analyze the source text and understands the characteristics;read parallel texts related to the industry and products;utilize appropriate translation methods and tools to improve the efficiency and quality of translation practice;and establish a terminology base to ensure the correctness and consistency of translation.Secondly,key points and difficulties of the translation,as well as solutions to those problems are represented.Finally,post-translation consists of proofreading,polishing and presentation of the translation.The third part is arranged for the theoretical framework,including the brief overview,applicability and practical application of Skopos theory.The fourth part shows the translation examples from three layers of words,sentences and texts in the source text,and analyzes them one by one in combination with the three rules of Skopos theory.The fifth part sheds light on the author’s summary and reflection,including personal gains,shortcomings and improved ways of this translation practice.
