| This paper focuses on the various factors influencing the painting style of Qian Xuan’s landscape paintings.By using historical literature analysis, the study examines the landscape paintings that Qian Xuan may have studied during his artistic formation process.Through image analysis, the paper compares and analyzes the similarities in the language and spatial representation of the landscape paintings, and analyzes their inheritance, further interpreting the uniqueness of Qian Xuan’s landscape paintings.Qian Xuan lived during a period of dynastic change from the late Song to early Yuan, but after the Yuan Dynasty,he refused to serve the new regime and instead chose to retreat to the mountains and focus on his art.As one of the "Wuxing Eight Jun," Qian Xuan was known for his comprehensive painting abilities, and his figures, landscapes, and flower-and-bird paintings were all considered exquisite. He opposed the "Layman" and promoted the "expert" approach, which had a significant influence on his contemporaries. In terms of painting style,Qian Xuan traced back to the Northern Song and Sui-Tang dynasties and incorporated his own interpretation and expansion, developing his unique style.Particularly in his landscape painting practice, his exploratory and innovative approach inspired and influenced Zhao Mengfu’s artistic creation.Qian Xuan’s landscape paintings are mainly divided into two categories: color landscape paintings, which have more surviving works, and ink landscape paintings, which only have one.In Qian Xuan’s landscape painting, the traditional complex halo dyeing technique is abandoned and the mountain stones are simply covered with stone color and his style shifted from luxurious to fresh and elegant. In ink landscape paintings,he reconstructed the "Three Distances" technique and harmoniously portrayed the visual effect of using "Seven parts ink and three parts color".The sophisticated use of ink in landscape painting, the design and creation of scenery, and the concise depiction of mountains, rocks, and trees all reflect a retro style in Chinese painting, which gives an overall sense of aesthetic flatness. In short,as a transitional painter in the development of Song and Yuan dynasty landscape painting,Qian Xuan’s meticulous outlines, elegant coloring, and creative exploration in landscape painting are easily overlooked if judged by the simplified and ethereal painting standards of the Yuan dynasty.Qian Xuan’s explorations in landscape painting had a significant impact on the development of Yuan dynasty landscape painting, and his historical status deserves recognition. |
