A Report On The E-C Translation Of Cambridge Grammar Of English(Chapter 10)

This translation selected Cambridge Grammar of English(Chapter 10)as the source text of the translation practice,which is a monograph on English grammar without Chinese translation.From the perspective of practical usage,the book summarized the general grammar rules in the daily use of English in a detailed way.One feature of this book compared with the other grammar books is that it has summarized the grammatical rules in spoken English as well and displayed the connection between the sentence intonation and meaning.The Chapter 10 selected in this practice is titled as “Sentence and clause patterns,” which is further divided into 5sections,namely “Introduction to sentences and clauses,” “Verb complementation,”“Clause types,” “Clause combination” and “Adjuncts.” These sections,with a huge number of examples,make a detailed illustration of the main elements,structures and combinations of English sentences.Through firstly computer translation and then manual proofreading,the translation practice has lasted for months,under the help of parallel texts collected in preparation before the translation.Through consulting and sorting out the relevant literature,the study on the translation practice of Cambridge Grammar of English is still very unpopular at present.Domestically speaking,the related studies are mostly the translation practice report of MTI students,which have analyzed grammar translation from many aspects such as translation skills,translation strategies and the growth of translators,while there is almost no relevant study abroad.This is also why this practice and report has its innovativeness.Based on the translation practice,the report firstly introduces the background of the practice,source text and its authors,and the basic structure of the report.This is followed by the translation process according to the three-step of the before,during and after the translation.With consideration of the large number of terminologies and examples in grammar books,next comes the translation difficulties in terminologies of English grammar,examples,acronyms,marks,and tables.Then it proceeds to methods respectively in dealing with those difficulties based on the practice,including quotes,literal translation,imitation,addition,combination,typing adjustment,adding notes,and so on.Finally,it concludes the main findings and limitations in the translation practice,pointing out the variousness of translation difficulties in practice and the importance in breaking out of the limits of the traditional definition of translation methods,with suggestions for the further practice and study.
