Li Yongchang was an outstanding representative of Huizhou painting in the late Ming Dynasty. In the creation of landscape painting,Li Yongchang is far after Dong Yuan,Juran,"Ermi" and other five dynasties,Song Dynasty, but also the "Yuan four" elegant style of ink,Dong Qichang’s "Songjiang",Shen Zhou’s "Wu men" and other schools of style, can be said to be eclectic, learn from others. In this paper, based on the full combination of calligraphy and painting works and literature materials, first of all,Li Yongchang’s family life and artistic activities to determine the ancestral identity of the Zogeli people in Xiuning, and Xinan,Jinling, the capital and other places between the literati painters, merchants, collectors, bureaucrats and politicians communication;Secondly,it studies the origin and style of Li Yongchang’s landscape painting, and summarizes the simple, light and elegant characteristics of Li Yongchang’s landscape painting formed in the process of advocating Ni Huang and learning from other masters. In addition, through the collection and collation of Li Yongchang’s poetry collection "Painting Xiang" and various kinds of poems and postscripts, the outstanding characteristics of Li’s painting thought and artistic concept are further excavated.Li can also learn from the tradition of the method at the same time, with the book into the painting, with the feeling into the painting, with the simple and naive brush and ink fully show his noble ambition and literati character. In traditional studies, scholars often regard Cheng Jiasu and Li Yongchang as the leader and the main general of Tiandu Painting School respectively.Although they have preliminarily pointed out Li Yongchang’s great significance to the formation and development of Xin ’an Painting School, the research on Li Yongchang has not been further promoted due to the lack of miscellaneous materials and literature.Based on the thorough research and analysis of Li Yongchang and his works, this paper redefines the concept and connotation of Tiandu School and Xin ’an School of Painting, and clearly points out the succession relationship between the two schools and the key role of Li Yongchang in connecting the preceding and the following. As the leader of the "Tiandu School" and the pioneer of the "Xin’an School",Li Yongchang laid a solid foundation for later painters in the style of ink and painting ideas, not only contributed to the early formation of the Xin ’an School of painting in the late Ming Dynasty, but also promoted the formation and shaping of the "Shang Yuan" style in Huizhou painting circle together with Cheng Jiasu and other early Xin ’an painters. Therefore,Li Yongchang’s unique identity in Xin ’an painting history and his key position in Huizhou painting circle need to be re-affirmed by the academic circle.
