| How to foster students’ subject core literacy has given rise to a hot discussion in education.The aim of English Curriculum Standard for Senior High Schools(2021)is to develop students’ core literacy,including language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.As an important element of English teaching,English reading teaching in senior high school plays a very crucial role in developing students’ core literacy.However,there are still some typical problems in the current English reading teaching.For example,teachers pay too much attention to the interpretation of grammar points and sentences while explaining the reading texts,but neglect the reading ability and development of students’ core literacy of English subject.Based on Constructivism Theory,Humanistic Education Theory and Holistic Education Theory,the author selects 53 students as research subjects from Grade Three in No.5 Senior High School in Tongliao City and adopts the reseach methods of classroom observation,questionnaires and interviews.And the study mainly focuses on the following research questions: 1.How do teachers develop English reading teaching based on the core literacy? 2.What are the factors that influence students’ English subject core literacy in the process of English reading teaching?This study analyzed the collected data and has got the following findings.1.English teachers in senior high schools initially develop the concept of English subject core literacy in their teaching and are able to consciously implement it into their English reading teaching.However,the students’ language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability should be further improved.2.The main factors that influence the implementation of English subject core literacy are: the exam-oriented education,teachers’ lack of in-depth and accurate understanding of the English subject core literacy,and students’ insufficient fundamental English knowledge and self-improvement awareness.Based on the above findings,this study makes the following pedagogic suggestions.Firstly,teachers should correctly understand the objectivity of examination-oriented education,make reasonable and adequate use of the washback effects of the National College Entrance Examination,and comply with the requirements of the curriculum standards to enhance students’ English core literacy;secondly,teachers should study the English Curriculum Standard for Senior High Schools(2021)in depth,correctly interpret the curriculum concepts and the connotation of English subject core literacy and implement it exactly into teaching practice;thirdly,in reading teaching,teacher should design and carry out activities that are conducive to developing students’ thinking ability and learning ability in different learning situations,so as to cultivate students’ English subject core literacy. |
