| This report is based on the translation of Big Bang,a book from the Penguin Popular Science series published by Penguin Books Ltd.in Great Britain.Aimed at teenagers in the UK,Big Bang mainly tells the story of how the Big Bang evolved and how scientists explored it.In the process of translation,translators encountered some difficulties,the translation of scientific terms,polysemous words,idioms,long difficult sentences,passive voice and so on.The translator took Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory as theoretical guidance and employed various translation strategies to overcome these difficulties.Case analysis was carried out from three levels of vocabulary,syntax and discourse.At the lexical level,the translator applied free translation,four-character phrase translation,amplification,and diction to achieve lexical equivalence.At the syntactic level,the translator employed amplification,omission,restructuring and conversion to ensure that the translation follows the syntactic rules of the target language.At the discourse level,cohesive devices including reference and conjunction are adopted to achieve the cohesion and coherence of the translated texts.Through this translation practice based on authentic tasks,the translator found that Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory is applicable to the translation of popular science texts.The strategies the translator adopted can provide reference for other translators who translate other popular science works and can also provide implications for the teaching of translation.In addition,this translation practice has enriched the translator’s translating experience and enhanced the translator’s theoretical knowledge and practical skills. |
