COVID-19 has been an international hot topic since 2020,and English-Chinese news translation plays an important part in domestic media coverage of the pandemic. The theory of translation variation emphasizes the adaptation of the content or form of the original work to obtain the excellent effect of information dissemination, and provides a proper theoretical basis for news translation.Under the guidance of this theory, the work presented in this thesis studies the variation methods in COVID-19 news translation, which is of great significance both practically and theoretically. The thesis collects examples from Chinese media such as Huanqiu.com,Cankaoxiaoxi.com,Chinadaily.com and Haiwainet.cn,which can legally translate and republish news from foreign media. Most of the source texts are from mainstream media in the Western world, making the study of this thesis representative and typical.By comparing the target texts with the source texts, this thesis makes an in-depth analysis of the methods adopted in English-Chinese translation of COVID-19 news, and on this basis analyzes the translation effects and the translation problems solved by these methods.Through case study, the thesis finds that trans-editing,summarized translation and selective translation are the most commonly used translation methods for COVID-19 news translation, and flexible application of various adaption techniques can successfully solve the translation difficulties in aspects of the headline, leads and body text, and in ideological problems. It is hoped that this study can provide a methodological reference for the practice of news translation and contribute to the in-depth study of translation variation theory.
