A Report On E-C Translation Of News About COVID-19 Pandemic Based On The Eco-translatology Theory

Over the past few years,when the COVID-19 pandemic continued to surge worldwide,international news reports have played an essential role in disseminating pandemic-related information.Translators should enhance the quality of English-to-Chinese news translation to keep Chinese people better informed of the development of the pandemic.Ecotranslatology theory proposed by Hu Gengshen is a modern Chinese translation theory.Its core ideas of translator-centeredness and threedimensional transformation have contributed significantly to E-C translation practice.Based on E-C news translation practice,this report takes ecotranslatology theory as theoretical guidance,and the case analysis is carried out from linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions.This report demonstrates how to break down linguistic barriers,facilitate cultural exchanges and fulfill communicative objectives in the target texts.In the linguistic dimension,translators can resort to a selection of words,conversion of voice,and reorganization of sentences to narrow the linguistic difference between English and Chinese and enhance fluency in the target text.In the cultural dimension,translators can use translation with annotations or paraphrase to minimize the feeling of estrangement brought by cultural differences and ensure the translation is well-tuned into the target language’s cultural eco-environment.In the communicative dimension,translators can apply to rewrite positive expressions for negative meaning and negative expressions for positive meaning to reflect communicative intention of the source text.This report concludes with three major findings from the case analysis.Firstly,eco-translatology theory and three-dimensional transformation strategies can help to guide and evaluate E-C news translation and are worth promoting.Secondly,the communication features of news require translators to reemphasize the communicative function of target texts.Under the guidance of eco-translatology theory,translation can enhance the readability of the target text and improve readers’ acceptability of the translation output.Thirdly,it’s harder for translators to present linguistic features than cultural and communicative intentions in news translation.News translators should improve their knowledge of English news discourse features and the culture of the source language.Thus,translators can properly translate culture-loaded expressions and communicate effectively in the target language.
