An Analysis On Information Loss In E-C Simultaneous Interpreting

Diplomatic address is of crucial importance to national narrative.It clarifies China’s attitude and deepens mutual understanding among countries.The Hong Kong incident has turned violent since relevant amendments.The UK is closely connected with Hong Kong for historical reasons.Since the Hong Kong issue,some of British words and deeds have interfered with China’s internal affairs and compromised China-UK relations.On Nov.18,2019,Mr.Liu Xiaoming,Chinese Ambassador to UK,held the third press conference concerning the Hong Kong issue.During this conference,Mr.Liu clarified Chinese’s position on the incident to British governments and the society,corrected people’s misunderstanding on “one country,two systems”,and encouraged them to abide by basic principles of China-UK relations.This report is based on a mock version of this press conference.After analyzing the source language and the transcript of the interpretation,the interpreter summarized information loss as the dominant problem presented in the task and discussed two types of the problem:comprehension omission and delay omission,based on Barik’s classification of omission.During the case study supported by Gile’s Effort Model,the interpreter found linguistic complexity and insufficient background knowledge mainly contributed to comprehension omission,and long ear-voice span and failure sequence mainly contributed to delay omission.And then corresponding strategies were proposed.That is to improve preparation before interpreting and to increase coordination(C)among listening and analyzing(L),production(P)and memory(M)while interpreting.Therefore,interpreters should strengthen pre-interpreting preparation on linguistic and background knowledge and actively adopt macro strategies such as generalization,anticipation,sentence segmentation and simplification during interpreting.This will avoid greater information loss due to passive omission caused by excessive cognitive pressure.
