A Report On The C-E Translation Of Annual Report On The Development Of China-ASEAN Cooperation(2016-2017)(Excerpt)

Under the background of the “Belt and Road” Initiative,the cooperation between China and ASEAN is getting closer and closer,covering more and more aspects,among which the economic and trade cooperation between China and ASEAN is developing at high speed.Consequently,there is an explosion in the translation of texts related to China-ASEAN cooperation in various fields.Translating the information about China-ASEAN cooperation and development into English can let more people in ASEAN countries be familiar with the history and current situation of China-ASEAN cooperation so as to attract them to invest in China and promote the development of China-ASEAN trade.Meanwhile,it is also conducive to conveying China’s positive image to the international community.Annual Report on the Development of China-ASEAN Cooperation(2016-2017)(hereafter referred to as Annual Report)is one of the research results of the China-ASEAN Research Institute of Guangxi University.As there was no English version of Annual Report at present,the author,entrusted by the China-ASEAN Research Institute of Guangxi University,held the responsibility for the translation of some of its chapters from Chinese to English,thereby elaborated a report based on the translation practice.The author’s translation practice deals with two parts in Chapter IV of Annual Report,namely,“China-Thailand Relations after the Change of Thai Royal Power” and “Influence of Myanmar’s Ethnic Armed Conflict on China-Myanmar Cooperation”.Guided by the Skopos theory of the German functionalist translation school,the author aims to provide English readers with a Chinese perspective on China-ASEAN regional issues and regional cooperation,hence conveying the positive image of China in a better way.In this translation practice report,the author first analyzes some cases in the translation process from three aspects: the English translation of the expression of Chinese cultural characteristics,the English translation of expressions with emotional coloring,and the Chinese-English translation of sentences,then summarizes the experience and limitations of this translation practice.After investigation,the present study finds that on the premise that the translator has a clear purpose for translation,the Skopos theory can become an appropriate guiding theory in translation practice.Meanwhile,the translator can flexibly select translation methods according to the purpose of translation,and a specific translation method can be applied to cope with different types of translation cases and achieve different effects.Finally,to better convey China’s positive image,the selection of expression also needs to be taken into account during the process of translation.
