| Recently,3D printing technology has been applied in aerospace,medicine,automobile and other fields.As this technology is being developed dramatically,the ethics of science and technology behind it should also receive the public attention.The source text for the translation task is the fourth chapter of the book 3D Printing:Applications in Medicine and Surgery,which elaborates on the ethical and legal issues involved in the application of 3D printing technology in medicine.The author of this book,Dr.Jasjit S.Suri,is a world-renowned scientist and works as the chief technology officer of Global Biomedical Technology Company in California,USA.The translator chooses this text for the communication and dissemination of science and technology.The source text is intended to convey information and featured with strict language,objective content and clear logic,which is consistent with the characteristics and function of “informative text”.In addition,passive voices,and long and complex sentences are frequently employed in the source text,which do not accord with the Chinese expression habits.In this report,the translator aims to figure out what kind of standards and methods should be employed when dealing with informative texts with Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory.Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory indicates that the target text should be reader-oriented,and the source text should be translated exactly and plainly.Based on Reiss’ s theory and the characteristics of the source text,the translator tries to summarize the translation standards of informative texts,namely,accurateness,smoothness and logic.Specifically,accurateness requires the translator to translate the terminologies accurately;smoothness demands that the linguistic form of the translation should be in line with the norm of the target language.Logic demands that the appropriate methods need to be employed to make the target text cohesive.This report demonstrates that Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory is helpful in determining translation standards and methods of informative texts and in improving the quality of translation. |
