Peace is the main theme in today’s world, yet it is inevitable that countries may encounter conflicts.Under such circumstances, the two(or more)sides in the international arena will exchange their opinions on major and critical issues through diplomatic strategic dialogues.Interpretation serves as a bridge in such occasions.Taking the 2021 China-US High-Level Strategic Dialogue as the example and cooperative principle(CP)proposed by the famous linguist Grice as a guide, this thesis analyzed the requirements that interpreters should meet and the strategies interpreters can adopt in consecutive interpreting in this special occasion. The analysis was carried out from the four maxims in CP,namely the maxim of quantity, quality, relation and manner. The study found out that from the maxim of quantity, interpreters can apply the strategy of amplification for the better understanding of the listener. From the maxim of quality, the interpreter should select target words strictly to ensure accuracy. From the maxim of relation, the interpreter can use the strategy of paraphrase to keep the interpreted meaning relevant to the specific language context. From the maxim of manner, the source language should be interpreted in a lucid, brief and orderly way. That is,the interpreter must use the clearest, shortest and most logical words to convey the speaker’s meaning.Interpreters can achieve this by applying word formation, hypernyms, pronouns and post-modifiers.Interpreters cooperate with speakers in diplomatic strategic dialogues. They can use the complete form of negation to show the speaker‘s position is unswerving. Moreover, amplification can be adopted to help neutralize the tone.Sentence pattern transformation, negation transfer and repetition strategies can also be used to convey the speaker’s attitude while the dialogue can still go on in a normal atmosphere.
