Mr.Wang Fangyu,a Chinese American scholar,is an authoritative expert in the study of Bada Shanren in the field of Chinese art history.Since the 1950 s,he has devoted himself to the collection and research of Bada Shanren’s calligraphy and painting,becoming the private collector with the largest number of Bada Shanren’s calligraphy and painting at home and abroad.His achievements in collecting are related to specific historical opportunities,and also come from the internalization and unremitting efforts of his literati.His collection and learning are mutually developed,and he is a representative case of research that combines collecting,research and creation.Through literature review,style analysis and other methods,this paper introduces Wang Fangyu’s family origin,social relations and collection process.Summarize his experience in the collection of Bada Shanren,the quantity of his collection and the loss of his collection,sort out his research results and appraisal methods on the painting and calligraphy of Bada Shanren,understand his aesthetic taste and thoughts of collection and collection,and strive to restore the overall picture of wang Fangyu’s collection and appreciation research of the painting and calligraphy of Bada Shanren.And put it into the whole category of the history of concurring and collecting,discuss the characteristics and significance of his concurring activities.Wang Fangyu’s collection of Bada Shanren’s calligraphy and painting is of great significance in the historical process of promoting the study of ancient Chinese calligraphy and painting in the west.By observing and analyzing his representative collection activities,we can outline the scope of activities of contemporary collectors and understand the situation of the western art market for the collection of ancient Chinese calligraphy and painting in the 20 th century.
