The cultivation of students’ English reading ability is one of the means to effectively develop their comprehensive language skills.The teaching of English reading should not only pay attention to the acquirement of knowledge,but also to the cultivation of students’ reading ability and interest.However,there are still many problems in English reading teaching in junior middle schools,which lead to the lack of students’ reading ability and interest.The KWL teaching model,an initialism for know,want to know and learn,is based on constructivism and schema theory and it has become an important aspect of English class teaching research.This teaching model not only focuses on the formation of students’ knowledge,but also on the improvement of students’ ability,which has largely solved the problems in current English reading teaching.In addition,it attaches importance to the student-centered class and students’ needs and encourages students to read and explore knowledge independently.The purpose of this paper is to test the effectiveness of KWL teaching model in junior high school English reading class.The research questions are as following:(1)What are the effects of the application of KWL teaching model on junior high school students’ English reading ability?(2)What are the effects of the application of KWL teaching model on junior high school students’ interest in English reading?(3)What are the attitudes of junior high school students towards the KWL reading teaching model?This paper adopts an empirical study.87 students are selected as the research subjects from two parallel classes of Grade 8 in Xi’an Foreign Languages School,including 42 students from Class 7(the control class)and 45 students from Class 8(the experimental class).The two classes use the same English textbook(PEP edition).The experiment lasted for nine weeks from October 11,2021 to December 17,2021.Three research instruments are adopted in the study,which are test,questionnaire and interview.Before the experiment,the students in EC and CC took the pre-test and pre-questionnaire;during the experiment,the KWL teaching model was applied in EC,while the traditional reading teaching model was used in CC;after the experiment,the students in EC and CC took the post-test and post-questionnaire,and three students in EC were interviewed.SPSS 25.0 is used to analyze the data of two tests and two questionnaires in EC and CC,and it’s concluded that the application of KWL teaching model in junior English reading teaching can improve students’ English reading ability and interest.In addition,the results of the interview show that junior high school students have positive attitudes towards the KWL reading teaching model,and they prefer the model.In the end,this paper puts forward some implications of the application of KWL teaching model in reading instruction and suggestions for future research.
