| With the rapid development of China’s food industry, food science has become a very important major in higher education. However, the number of textbooks in English is still insufficient. The author selects Milk and Dairy Products Technology in Chinese as the material for this translation practice, which aim at providing references for bilingual teaching of food majors, promoting the cooperation between foreign languages and food majors, and enriching the translation materials of dairy products industry. The author has select Chapter 10 of Milk and Dairy Products Technology. This translation practice consists of 12,387 Chinese characters and focuses on the basic general knowledge of milk and dairy products, production and processing, and scope of application.According to British theorist Peter Newmark’s classification of text types, the source text belongs to typical "informative text".This translation practice is guided by Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation theory, and adopts specific translation strategies and methods. On the one hand, the translator maintains the accuracy of the translation and faithfully reflects the original information by adopting specific translation strategies and methods. On the other hand, the target text can be better conveyed to the target language readers, faithful to the target language norms. This report first gives a brief description of the task of translation and introduces the three stages of pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Then,it discusses the feasibility of Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation theory as a macro-guide for this project. Then,it focuses on the analysis and discussion of translation cases. From the perspectives of semantic translation and communicative translation, the difficulties and solutions in the translation process are classified and summarized. In semantic translation, the translator uses literal translation and linear translation to properly handle dairy terms, modal verbs and sentence groups, accurately convey the information content of source text, and keep the rigor of sci-tech text.In communicative translation, the translator starts from the differences between Chinese and English, and on the basis of careful analysis of source text, chooses several specific translation techniques, such as addition, omission and voice change,so as to keep the translation fluent and appropriate.Especially for long and difficult sentences, the author adjusts the source text and the word order of the target language to make the translation conform to the readers’ habits of the target language and enhance the logicality and coherence of the translation expression. In translation practice, translators need to adopt specific translation strategies or methods under the macro guidance of theory in order to produce satisfactory translations. Finally, the author summarizes the shortcomings of this translation project and offers some suggestions for other translators, especially those interested in sci-tech text translation. |
