This report is based on the E-C translation of the first four chapters in a modern American novel The Last Green Valley, written by acclaimed American author Mark Sullivan.Based on a real story during World War II,its text is a distinctive work with fluent and vivid language and rich content, which is worth translating. Moreover, how to faithfully and smoothly translate it into Chinese, and convey its exact meanings to Chinese readers is quite a challenge to the translator. The core of the theory of functional equivalence lies in translating without adhering to the form of the language, restoring the semantics and style of the text, and achieving maximum equivalence between the two languages at the lexical level, syntactic level, textual and stylistic equivalence,so that the readers of the target language and the readers of the source language can have the same reading experience as far as possible. In this report, the author will analyze the lexical, syntactic and stylistic aspects of the selected novel in order to investigate the translation strategies and methods adopted in the process of English-Chinese translation to improve the equivalence and readability of the translated text,so as to verify the significance and feasibility of functional equivalence theory in the translation of the novel. This report consists of five parts: introduction to the report, translation process, theoretical basis, case study, and conclusion.Among them, the case study is the focus of this report,in which the translator will analyze the text at three levels and discuss translation strategies and techniques under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. It is hoped that this translation practice and the report will provide some experience and reference for the translation and research of functional equivalence theory in the English to Chinese translation of novels.
