A Report On E-C Translation Of The Children’s Crusade Under The Guidance Of Translator Behavior Criticism

The translator selects The Children’s Crusade written by an American novelist Ann Packer as the translation material of this report.In this novel,the mundane family life of the Blairs is vividly presented.The highlight of this novel lies in its unique multi-perspective narrative,the siblings of this novel taking turns telling the story one by one.With their interwoven narratives,the author naturally presents the plot of this family story,profoundly reveals the realistic plight that everyone may face in daily life.Moreover,the novel is abundant in colloquial expression,childish words and psychological descriptions.Thus,how to reproduce the original flavor featured by vivid and detailed description and represent the distinct characters is a difficult point in the translation practice.This translation report contains five chapters.The previous three chapters briefly introduce the author,the source text,the original feature,the translation process as well as the theoretical framework.Chapter Four is a key part in this report,which mainly involves case analysis of translation strategies employed by the translator to increase the degree of rationality at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels under the guidance of "truth-seeking"and "utility-attaining" in accordance with Translator Behavior Criticism.To be specific,translation strategies,including annotation,four-character words,conversion of parts of speech,onomatopoeic words and modal particles,are applied in the lexical part.In terms of the syntactical level,the translator employs division of long sentences,adjustment of sentence order as well as conversion between passives and actives when facing difficult and complicated sentences.With regard to the textual level,the translator uses amplification and concretization based on plot and context in order to enhance textual coherence and fluency.Chapter Five draws a conclusion about the limitations and major findings in this translation report.Through this translation practice,the translator finds that Translator Behavior Criticism can serve as a useful and effective tool in guiding novel translation practice.Following the principle "truth-seeking being the base with utility-attaining as the aim",the translator tries her best to stay faithful to the source text and reproduce the authenticity,vividness and literariness of the original,aiming to realize intra-translation "truth-seeking".Meanwhile,considering cultural differences and the needs of target readers,the translator employs some translation strategies so as to enhance the readability of the translation text,striving to achieve extra-translation "utility-attaining".During the whole process,the translator endeavors to keep a dynamic balance between "truth-seeking" and "utility-attaining",thus improving the degree of rationality in her translation and better conveying the significant educational values of the source text.
