A Translation Report On Ethnic Tourism And Cultural Identity:A Case Study Of Qiang Ethnic Group (Excerpt) Guided By Skopos Theory

This translation practice takes Vermeer’s skopos theory as the guiding theory.The source text is selected from the book Ethnic Tourism and Cultural Identity: A Case Study of Qiang Ethnic Group written by Professor Wu Qifu.It belongs to the informative text which centers on information transmission and communicative purpose of the text.This report aims at exploring the translation methods of the informative text under the guidance of skopos theory.Skopos theory contains three rules: the skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.Among them,the skopos rule is the most important rule.Coherence rule and fidelity rule are subordinated to the skopos rule.In this translation practice,the translator always takes the skopos rule as the leading rule,and on the basis of the skopos rule,the translator tries to realize the application of coherence rule and fidelity rule.In this report,the translator selects 24 typical translation cases and makes an analysis of them.Through case studies,the translator finds that,as for the translation of proper nouns,culture-loaded words and dialect words in the source text,the methods like transliteration plus annotation,transliteration plus literal translation,transliteration plus addition and paraphrase can be adopted according to the three rules of skopos theory so that the target text can spread Chinese culture and realize the communicative purpose.As for the translation of various complex sentences,guided by the skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,the translator uses such methods as conversion,shifting,combination and division to strengthen the readability of the target text and achieve the communicative purpose.As for the translation at textual level,under the guidance of the skopos rule,fidelity rule and coherence rule,the translator adds various conjunctions to realize the cohesion of discourse,and reproduces the contextual meaning of the source text to achieve the coherence of discourse.Through this translation project,the translators verifies that skopos theory is of effective guiding role in the translation of the informative text.Guided by the three rules of skopos theory,the translator can choose appropriate translation methods so as to achieve the translation purposes of the text.What’s more,the translator expects that this report will be of some reference significance for the translation of other informative texts in the future.
