Archaeology And Its Discontents: Why Archaeology Matters (Chapter 5) English-Chinese Translation Practice Repor

The text of this English-Chinese translation practice report is taken from Chapter5 of the book Archaeology and Its Discontents: Why archaeology Matters,by John C.Barrett.The chapter provides a systematic account of the shift from functionalism to symbolism and structuralism in archaeology,and the impact of symbolic and structural archaeology on the field of archaeological research as a whole.This translation practice report analyses and summarizes the problems and difficulties encountered in the translation of this text in three areas:translation of vocabulary,translation of syntax and translation of parenthesis,guided by the Skopos Theory of German scholar Hans Vermrer.In the translation of vocabulary,the use of semantic extension,context selection,and the use ofadjunctive and subtractive lexical methods are explored;in the translation of syntax,the use of inversion,slip translation passive voiceare explored;the translation of parenthesis is analysed in three cases: prepositional phrases as parenthesis,short sentences as parenthesis and subordinate clauses as parenthesis.It is hoped that this translation practice report will be of value as a reference in the translation of archaeological texts and will provide a little insight into the field of archaeological translation studies.
