Spatial Narrative Analysis Of Poverty Alleviation Documentaries

By the end of 2020,thanks to the joint efforts of Chinese people over the past eight years,the entire rural population has been lifted out of poverty and the problem of regional poverty has been solved.People’s living standards in remote areas of China have been effectively improved.The great achievement in poverty alleviation is not only a pioneering achievement in the history of Chinese development,but also an inspiration to the world,which is a "miracle of poverty reduction".In the process of poverty alleviation,a number of poverty-alleviation documentaries have also begun to appear in people’s vision.By recording the efforts of people and poverty-alleviation officials on the road to poverty alleviation,making more people understand the real development and construction process,so as to show the glorious achievements in poverty alleviation.No Poverty Land is one of the typical representatives.No Poverty Land is a documentary produced by Hong Kong TVB and presented from the perspective of Hong Kong media.With unique spatial narrative techniques,the film shows China’s brilliant achievements in poverty alleviation in recent years,making audiences at home and abroad more deeply understand the hardships behind the "miracle of poverty reduction",and there is a certain space for exploration in the documentary narrative and creation.This paper takes the documentary No Poverty as the research object,based on the three-dimensional space theory represented by Lefebvre,and discusses how space completes the story narration,shapes the character image and expresses the theme emotion through the lens in poverty alleviation documentaries from three aspects:physical space,social space and spiritual space.In the physical space,the general background of poverty alleviation is explained through the geographical changes of the natural geographical environment and the new rural houses,which lays the foundation for the development of the following characters.At the same time,people cannot exist without social relations.Therefore,in the social space,this paper summarizes the different characters shaped in the film,so as to explore their roles in poverty alleviation.In the spiritual space,it tries to dig the inner emotions of the characters in the film,grab the real comments of the audience in the film comment section and analyze the psychological impact of audience.No Poverty Land carries out narrative,conveys emotion and expresses theme in three spaces,showing the important significance of space elements in poverty alleviation documentaries,and further deepening the audience’s understanding and cognition of this kind of documentaries.
